Temple Sinai welcomes Dr. Elsie Stern, Professor of Bible at the Reconstructionist Rabbinical College, for a weekend in honor of Rabbi Fred N. Reiner’s 50th anniversary of ordination.

Topic: What will be new in the new CCAR Torah Commentary?
Dr. Stern will discuss why the Reform rabbinical association decided to produce a new Torah translation and commentary and will highlight its distinctive features.

Topic: Relevant to What?: A Case Study from Genesis 1:1
A look at two interpretations a single word in Genesis 1:1 by Rashi and Ibn Ezra. We will explore how these interpretations bring different questions, concerns and approaches to the text.
10:30 AM – Kehillat Shabbat Service
Topic: Typos in the Torah? Ancient Versions and the Work of the Masoretes
Dr. Stern and Rabbi Reiner will present a joint d’var torah during the service.
A kiddush lunch will follow the service.

Since October 7th, 2023, many have struggled with conversations about Israel/Palestine, feeling unprepared, conflicted, or at odds with loved ones. In this series we will explore this complex issue through a dual-narrative lens, rejecting binary thinking. We will examine Zionist history, Jewish and Palestinian connections to their homelands, and coexistence efforts while fostering courageous conversations.
Ruti Kadish, born in Israel, holds a PhD in Near Eastern Studies from UC Berkeley. She has worked in Jewish education, diversity consulting, and nonprofit leadership, designing progressive Israel curricula and fostering inclusive communities.

Susan Page has covered 12 presidential campaigns and 7 White House administrations, and she’s interviewed the past 11 presidents (three of them after they left office, and one before he moved in) and had the only print interview with President Biden before he left office. She is the best-selling author of three books: The Rulebreaker: The Life and Times of Barbara Walters, Madam Speaker: Nancy Pelosi and the Lessons of Power and The Matriarch: Barbara Bush and the Making of an American Dynasty. She is a former president of the White House Correspondents Association and the Gridiron Club, and she has won every journalism award given specifically for coverage of the presidency. In 2020, she moderated the vice presidential debate between Mike Pence and Kamala Harris, the first print reporter ever to be the solo moderator for the Commission on Presidential Debates. Susan is a graduate of Northwestern and Columbia universities.
