Spirituality, Song and the Road to Freedom How Music Amplifies the Journey

Friday, January 17

6:00 pm Oneg
6:30 pm Service followed by Dinner
The road to African-American freedom and equality is paved with songs that embody deep and abiding sorrows, hopes and determination. Join us for this year’s special music Shabbat, to take place on MLK weekend, when we welcome Distinguished Professor of Musicology, author and musician Tammy Kernodle. Listen, pray, move and sing as we learn the power and purpose of this historic music of freedom. Dr. Kernodle, Cantor Rhodes and Temple Sinai clergy will join forces with our own adult choir to create a spirited and meaningful musical Shabbat.

The service will be preceded by an oneg and followed by a buffet dinner. Due to space limitations in the social hall, this dinner is expected to sell out; please register early to reserve your spot!

Music Committee member Kent Allen had a chance to talk with Dr. Tammy Kernodle about this year’s special Shabbat Shira

A bishop, a rabbi and a musicologist/historian sit down for breakfast…

No, it’s not the opening line for a joke; it actually begins the story of how Temple Sinai came to invite our featured performer for this year’s Shabbat Shira service.

In the above scene, Dr. Tammy Kernodle of Miami University in Ohio is the musicologist/historian and Jonathan Roos is one of the clergypeople. They all met at a gathering last summer at the Chautauaqua Institution in New York, where the rabbi and Dr. Kernodle were among those housed at the institution’s religion-themed house during a weeklong program.

The rabbi participated in the week’s ecumenical services and came to know Dr. Kernodle while living under the same roof and sharing morning meals. He attended her lecture — about the power of music to sway a listener’s emotions and commitment — and came away impressed.

Thus is Dr. Kernodle joining us for a flurry of activity that begins the night of Jan. 17. She will lead us for our annual Friday night Shabbat Shira service, then take part in a number of other events over the Martin Luther King weekend.
