Jews are funny, but they are funny in different ways at different times. The Three Stooges don’t resemble Seinfeld. This is because they come from periods of time when Jews lived different lives, faced different challenges, and fit differently into the broader American context. We will examine a number of different Jewish comedians from different eras and see the ways that the relationship between American society and Jews are reflected in how they make us laugh.
Steve Gimbel is a professor of philosophy at Gettysburg College in Pennsylvania where he held the Edwin T. and Cynthia Shearer Johnson Chair for Distinguished Teaching in the Humanities. He has written seven books including Einstein’s Jewish Science: Physics at the Intersection of Politics and Religion, Einstein: His Space and Times, and Isn’t that Clever: A Philosophical Account of Humor and Comedy. He has also been an amateur stand-up comedian (who did not quit his day job…).
