PHILOSOPHY

Temple Sinai is a congregation of vitality and commitment, of religious growth and dedicated study. Since its founding in 1951,  Temple Sinai has achieved national prominence as a leading congregation in the Reform movement.  Click here for Temple Sinai's history.

Affiliated with the Union of Reform Judaism (URJ), Temple Sinai fits on the traditionalist side of the spectrum of Reform Judaism.  We consider Jewish tradition to be central to our congregational life and are guided in our ritual, communal and administrative decisions by our Jewish values.

We find joy and enrichment by fulfilling the mitzvot of worship and celebration and by working together to seek justice in our society.  Shabbat and holidays are time of prayer and rejoicing together as we seek meaning in our cycle of holy days.

We mark significant life events in the synagogue, too.  We have developed rituals to mark birth, bar and bat mitzvah, religious school consecration and confirmation, marriage and death.  Recognizing that Judaism requires commitment, we have high educational standards for bar and bat mitzvah, including a pledge to continue Jewish education through the tenth grade.

From its beginnings, Temple Sinai has taken seriously the teachings of Judaism as an ethical system with a message for our own day.  We are dedicated to democratic principles, to justice in our society, and to the equality of all people before God.

We recognize that individuals come to a congregation with diverse needs, and we seek to satisfy the various Jewish requirements of our membership — young and old, single and married, Jews-by-choice and mixed-married couples — in a community of Jewish life.

Judaism can provide excitement and joy.  We at Temple Sinai work together to create Jewish opportunities and to grow in learning and Jewish fulfillment.  For more: Membership - Join Us.
