3/8/09 Geniza Ceremony Recap (DOC 438.27 KB)
|
04/05/09
|
|
Approximately 25 Temple Sinai members of all ages gathered for a Geniza Ceremony, led by Rabbi Portnoy. The Geniza is a depository vault, in this case an in-ground vault, for sacred & other Hebrew books that are no longer usable.
Temple Sinai deposited many old prayer books, particularly Gates of Prayer, and other books containing Hebrew printing. Many of the attending members also brought old prayer books and texts no longer used. It was an educational & enlightening experience for all attendees.
Following the ceremony, Rabbi Portnoy & Sheldon Grosberg the Executive Director of Gan Zikaron, led the attendees to the Temple Sinai Cemetery sections & answered questions about the arrangements & guidelines of the Cemetery.Of particular note is that the price of purchasing plots at the Temple Sinai Cemetery will be going up from $1700 to $1800 beginning on June 1, 2009. For more, contact Executive Director, Ellen Agler, or Ted Rosen (301-530-3403; gted666@gmail.com).

The Past is Present. So is the future.
In the 5 years since its dedication, the Garden of Remembrance has apportioned areas of space to 15 Jewish congregations in the greater Washington area, as well as areas for those unaffiliated with a congregation. This inclusiveness echoes the unity of the communal cemeteries traditional in Jewish communities throughout the world.
We invite you to begin a new tradition with your family. Learn more about the area's only not-for-profit cemetery operated by a board of Jewish community leaders.
